Peter Hall announcement
15 April 2009 Peter Hall - former ICT/ICL Director and personality - died 9th April.
Peter Hall had an eventful career in the UK computer industry. In 1959 he was appointed manager of the Ferranti Computing Department. At the time Ferranti was developing the Atlas and Orion computers, and had a major computer development centre and factory at West Gorton in Manchester. He had a key role in persuading ICT to develop the 1900 range of computers - successfully launched in 1964. As director responsible for the development of large computers, he helped transform ICT into the major UK computer company. Continued as a director in the new ICL company formed following the merger of ICT and EELM in 1968. ICL then developed the new 2900 series, and in the 70's Peter had responsibility for Government marketing. President of the British Computer Society 1981/82, and former Chairman of the North West branch of the Computer Conservation Society. Many of Peter's stories from his varied career in ICL can be read in the book Another ICL Anthology on this website - and he also wrote the foreword in 1998. There was a well attended Thanksgiving Service at All Saints Church at Siddington in April 2009. ----- |
