Stories and Anecdotes

This site enables publication of stories and anecdotes from the people of ICL.

Two ICL Anthology books have been published - collected and edited by Hamish Carmichael.

The ICL Anthology books

The two excellent books produced by Hamish Carmichael contain lots of anecdotes and recollections from people who worked in the original companies (BTM, Powers Samas, ICT, Elliott, Ferranti, Leo, English Electric, and Singer) and in ICL (in the 1970s to 1990s).
The references are:

An ICL Anthology; Hamish Carmichael (editor); 1996; Laidlaw Hicks Publishers; 260 pages; IBSN 0-9527389-0-2

Another ICL Anthology; Hamish Carmichael (editor);1998; Laidlaw Hicks Publishers; 256 pages; IBSN 0-9527389-2-9

These books are out of print – so we have arranged for them to be available on this website – read on for more.

The ICL Anthology books on the web

We are publishing these books by agreement with the copyright holder and editor of the books, who is Hamish Carmichael.

Click here to go to an introductory page, which explains more about browsing the books on this website.

The first book was published on this website in 2004, and the second in 2005. Further Stories and Anecdotes can be published on this site – see below.

The ICL Anthology books on paper

There are people who want paper copies of the books - if you have copies of either book that you wish to dispose of (or sell) please contact the Pensioner Topics Editor using contact.

Bits and Bytes Newsletter

The ‘Bits and Bytes’ newsletter also contains stories and will continue to be published every 6 months, on paper (since not all pensioners use the Internet).
The latest issue is available in the open area (see the feature on the home page), and a full set of previous issues is published in the member’s area.

Stories and Anecdotes on the website (A further ICL Anthology )

It would be good to build up a further anthology collection.
Anecdotes and recollections that would be of interest to many ICL pensioners, or which are of historical significance, can be published on this site, or in the Bits & Bytes newsletter, or both.
If you have worthy stories or anecdotes about ICL that should be recorded for posterity, or for the interest of your fellow pensioners, please write them down and then contact the Pensioner Topics editor.
Contributions should follow the format established in the anthology books – which is context (company or era), topic title, author name, text paragraphs.
Hamish Carmichael has agreed to be honorary associate editor for this part of the website, and specifically will be consulted about relating new stories to existing stories.
